Oakland Interfaith Community Choir

Founded in September of 2013, the Oakland Interfaith Community Choir now has over 150 members! OICC was created to fill a need in the community for a low-commitment, high-energy group that follows the same mission as its parent choir: to inspire joy and unity among all people through black gospel and spiritual music.

OICC performs 4 to 5 times in various venues and churches in the Bay Area, including the Paramount Theatre and Mission Dolores Basilica, as well as outreach to inmates at Santa Rita prison.

New members are welcomed during the first two months of each season: August/September and January/February.

FAQs

When can I join?
New members are welcomed during the first two months of each season, August/September and February/March.

Do I have to audition?
Nope — OICC is a non-auditioned choir

How often and where does OICC rehearse?
OICC rehearses one or two times a month at Imani Community Church in Oakland. Full rehearsals happen once a month, and section leaders may lead an additional rehearsal for their section to review music and address questions. Rehearsals are typically held on the third Saturday of the month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Please arrive by 2:30 to find parking and to settle in.

How should I prepare for rehearsal?
As it is in the Black gospel music tradition, most songs are taught by ear. It is good practice to have a notepad to write down lyrics, and use a recording device (many people use their phones) to record the songs and practice between rehearsals.

What are the COVID protocols?
As of May 2023, OIGC does not require proof of vaccination. However, due to continuing COVID concerns, masks are required at rehearsal until further notice. Any updates in the future will be communicated and all participants in the organization are required to comply with OIGC's COVID Protocols to participate. Find OIGC’s complete COVID protocols at http://www.oigc.org/governance.

What else should I know?
The Oakland Interfaith Community Choir sings Black gospel music. Song selection is at the discretion of the Artistic Director and considerations are made to provide the most inclusive experience for singers of all faiths. However, there may be times when the lyrics draw specifically from Christian imagery and experience.

What does it cost?
There is a seasonal administration fee to be in OICC. We ask that you commit to the full season (February–June OR August–December). Admin fees are $30 per month ($150 per season). Uniform costs include a teal bow tie or stole, OIGC T-shirt ($20-$25 each), and your own black-colored clothing, socks and shoes.
